Kenya's Stunning Beaches

Discover Kenya's best beaches, from Diani to Lamu, and explore top coastal highlights and beach-safari combos.

Kenya is known for its national parks and its wildlife. But it also has the most beautiful beaches, with a coastline of 536 kilometers long. Besides, it has numerous islands along the coast that make for an amazing visit. Below we highlight some of the best.

DIANI BEACH – SOUTH OF MOMBASA

Diani Beach is probably Kenya’s best-known beach. It is also our favourite beach: a stretch of 15 kilometers of pristine white sand, lined with coconut palms and fronting an amazingly clear blue ocean.

This beach has numerous resorts to choose from. Ranging from laidback and simple to extremely luxurious, and from small-scale boutique hotels to places with everything you need. Activities include deep sea fishing, snorkeling, diving, sandbank excursions, and day-safaris to Shimba Hills.

CHALE ISLAND – A PRIVATE ISLAND SOUTH OF DIANI BEACH

Chale Island is a true gem located just south of Mombasa, close to the famous Diani Beach. This private paradise offers an exclusive escape for travelers seeking tranquility and natural beauty. It is so special that there is only one boutique hotel on the entire island, making it a truly unique destination. Surrounded by mangrove forests and the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, Chale Island boasts an enchanting alcove beach with powdery white sand.

With its pristine environment and limited access, Chale Island ensures a peaceful and intimate atmosphere. It is the perfect retreat for honeymooners, couples, or anyone looking to escape the crowds. Guests can enjoy a range of activities, from snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs and kayaking through mangroves to simply unwinding in the serene surroundings. With its unspoiled beauty and secluded charm, Chale Island is a slice of paradise waiting to be discovered.

BAMBURI BEACH – JUST NORTH OF MOMBASA

Bamburi Beach is a stunningly beautiful beach, just north of Mombasa. As such, it is popular with Mombasa residents, who often visit here in the weekends. This means the beach is more lively and local than Diani, but that does not make it any less worth your visit. You can find a variety of beautiful resorts and hotels in Bamburi, and many different restaurants, bars and even a go-kart-track. Also nearby Haller Park is worth a visit. Its nature trails are great for shaded walk and cycling tours. In its wildlife conservatory you can hand feed giraffes, see hippos, crocodiles, snakes and other wildlife, and visit a butterfly pavilion.

KILIFI – COASTAL CHARM ON KILIFI CREEK

Kilifi is a charming coastal town located midway between Mombasa and Malindi. Known for its relaxed vibe and stunning natural beauty, Kilifi offers a unique mix of pristine beaches, lush forests, and vibrant local culture. The town is set on the shores of Kilifi Creek, a serene inlet surrounded by mangroves and perfect for water activities like kayaking, sailing, and stand-up paddleboarding.

WATAMU BEACH – A SNORKELER’S PARADISE NORTH OF MOMBASA

Watamu itself is a charming blend of Arab, Kenyan, and Italian influences. The town offers plenty of hotels and resorts to choose from, and thanks to the Italian influence, you can enjoy authentic pizza and delicious gelato. For those looking to explore beyond the beach, the nearby Gede ruins provide a glimpse into the region’s rich history, while the Arabuko Sokoke Forest offers a chance to spot rare wildlife, from the golden-rumped elephant shrew to countless bird species. Watamu Beach truly offers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and culture.
